It was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean in the early
morning of 15 April 1912 after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, UK to New York City, US.
The Titanic was 882
feet 9 inches long with a maxium breadth of 92 feet and 6 inches, her total
height measured from the the base of the keel to the top of the brigde was 104
feet.
The vessel carried a
total of 20 lifeboats, 14 standard wooden harland and wolff lifeboat with a
capacity of 65 people each and 4 Englehardt "collapsible"
(wooden bottom collapsible canvas sides) lifeboats identified as A to D with a
capacity of 47 people each. She had two emergency cutter boats with a capacity of
40 people each.
She had a twin brother
the Olympic and registered Liverpool as their home port.
Titanic's passengers numbered
around 1,317 people: 324 in First Class, 284 in Second Class. and 709 in
Third Class. Of these, 869 (66%) were male and 447 (34%) female. There were 107
children aboard, the largest number of which were in Third Class
The ship was
considerably under capacity on her maiden voyage, as she could accommodate
2,566 passengers—1,034 First Class, 510 Second Class, and 1,022 Third Class.
The exact number of people aboard is not known as not all of those who had booked tickets made it to the ship; about fifty people cancelled for various reasons, and not all of those who boarded stayed aboard for the entire journey. Fares varied depending on class and season. Third Class fares from London, Southampton or Queenstown cost £7 5s (equivalent to £608 today) while the cheapest First Class fares cost £23 (£1,928 today). The most expensive First Class suites were to have cost up to £870 in high season (£72,932 today)
We had watched the movie, and it wasn't like that love story they had told us, it was the first trip to England to New York that ended in tragedy, they had planned to do the trip every 2 weeks or something like that with the 3 vessels, the Titanic, the Olympic and the smaller RMS Oceanic but that didn't happen.

Ever since I was a little girl I have loved this story! It is amazing, but also tragic. What I find amazing is how they discovered the Titanic many years after it sunk. Great job!
ReplyDeleteThe Titanic was a hideous incident, I hope it doesn't happen again, it was a great lesson to the engineers and designers they are not perfect we have to focus in the safety and avoid this kind of accidents
ReplyDeleteIt was really tragic that sank a few days to inaugurate. I liked the story of the film.
